What You Need To Create A Music YouTube Channel
Just like any other social media platform, there are things you need to get started on Youtube.
- New Gmail Account
- A laptop or Your Android device
- Youtube Channel Name
Let’s be clear: don’t obsess about having a fancy Youtube channel name.
It won’t make or break your channel.
I highly recommend going with your artist’s name.
You know why?
Your artist’s name is what your fans will use to search for you. That way, you have a better chance of showing up above all other channels.
That said, let’s get on with…
How To Create A Music YouTube Channel
Creating a music youtube channel is easier than you can ever imagine. In fact, in 5 minutes you can create two Youtube channels.
Here’s a breakdown of how to go about it:
Step1#: Go To Youtube And Sign In
First off, head over to YouTube and click on “Sign in” in the right corner of the page.
Then log in using the Gmail you created to log in.
Let’s move on to:
Step2#: Click On Your Profile Image
In the top right corner, click on your profile image.
Next, click on “Create a channel”.
Step3#: Create Your Channel
On the screen below, you need to choose between Personal or Custom name (brand):
I highly recommend sticking with a custom name because it’s recommended for small businesses and brands.
Next, name your channel. (As I have said, use your stage name).
You should now see this interface below:
Congrats! You’ve successfully created a music youtube channel.
But we need to customize it so your fans can stick around once when they visit.
In general, you’ll be able to do the following:
- Add a Channel profile photo
- Customize your music channel
- Create stunning channel art.
All this will be discussed in detail in the section below…
How To Customise Your Music YouTube Channel like A Pro!
In this section, you’ll customize your Youtube channel.
Here’s a breakdown:
Step1#: How To Create A YouTube Channel Art
Channel art is Youtube’s version of Facebook cover photo.
I highly recommend creating a channel art in your early days, because it tells your visitors what you do when you do and how you do it.
Here’s a pretty good example from Adam Ivy:
Adam Ivy is a popular music producer, singer, and music marketing, specialist. I highly recommend giving him a subscription if you want to become a pro musician.
As you can see, he used channel art to tell visitors what his channel is all about. Which increases the likelihood of getting subscribers.
How? because people already know what he does.
So they more likely to subscribe and binge-watch his content.
For more inspirational ideas on channel arts, look up your favorite artists on Youtube.
Look at what they do and implement that into your own.
Essentially, your channel should have the following:
- When you publish videos
- Call To Action
- The type of music you create
The question is: How do you create channel arts?
There are lots of free software out there. If you’re familiar with photoshop, it’s an amazing option.
But if you don’t have firsthand graphics design experience (like me) canva is a great option.
And also, you can use Snappa too.
Now, you know what to do. But take a look at the channel art, they all have the same size and format.
There are some recommendations they follow.
Your channel should follow YouTube’s recommendations below:
- Minimum width: 2048 X 1152 px. This is the “safe area”, where text and logos are guaranteed not to be cut off when displayed on different devices.
- Maximum width: 2560 X 423 px. This means that the “safe area” is always visible; the areas to each side of the channel art are visible depending on the viewer’s browser size.
- File size: 6MB or smaller recommended.
The reason for these recommendations is because Youtube is visited from different devices (Android phones, iPhones, TV, and desktops).
It matters to Youtube that everyone enjoys their visit to the platform regardless of the various devices.
Let get on to…
Tools And Tips To Create Stunning Channel Arts
In other to create stunning and sizeable channel arts for your music you need to use Channel Art Template.
Here’s how the channel art template looks like:
The best part? you can download it for free.
Essentially what it does is guide your design so that elements meant for the mobile user are not shown to TV viewers alone.
That brings us to the first tip for creating stunning channel art…
1. Text And Logos Shouldn’t Exceed the “Safe area”
Scroll up to take a look at the channel Art Template I showed you earlier.
The text and logos section (safe area) is where your branding takes place.
All the valuable designs and branding shouldn’t exceed the logo and text section.
Else, they won’t be visible to visitors on mobile and desktop.
The second tip is…
2. Consider Your Links
Youtube enables you to add five links to your YouTube channel. It may be your Spotify, social media, and website links.
So while designing your Channel arts avoid the area where your links will appear.
For example, check out our channel:
To design your channel art watch the video below to get started:
With that, let move down to:
Step2#: How To Add Links To Your Channel
As a musician, adding links to your channel is a powerful way to get more Spotify streams.
More so, you can gain more followers on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok.
Heck, if you have a website, you can drive a lot of traffic there.
Here’s a breakdown:
2. Ensure you’re logged in. Next, click on the “Customize Channel” tab
3. Click on the “Basic Info” tab.
5. Click “Add link” then type the title of the link (for example “Facebook“)
6. To add more links (5 maximum), click “Add a link“.
7. When you’re done, click publish and the changes will take effect.
Simple. That’s not all…
Step3#: How To Add Your Channel Icon
You should have seen some channels with pretty looking Channel icon (profile photo ).
Haven’t heard of channel icon?
Channel icon is Instagram’s version of profile photo.
Follow the steps below to add your channel icon:
1. Head over to your channel homepage
Hover around your channel icon (that looks like an Instagram profile photo) until you see edit.
Click on edit and choose your preferred channel icon.
NOTE: Your channel icon should be 800 x 800 pixels. Secondly, it should be one following format: JPG, GIF, BMP, or PNG file (no animated GIFs).
Now, it’s time for the next section…
How To Optimise Your Channel For More Views
This is my favorite.
Let’s face it!
Youtube is the second largest search engine in the world (after Google).
What does that tell you?
Videos watched on your Youtube are based on search. Therefore, optimizing your channel is gold.
(After all, getting views, subscribers and making money is the end goal)
You’ll optimize your channel in just 2 easy steps:
Step1#: Craft Search-friendly Descriptions
In general, youtube gives you a space to write a little about the type of music you create, and who you are.
Therefore, you need to be creative because YouTube has a 1,000 character limit.
But, more powerful than that, your description is indexed by the search engine. So, whoever searches for your channel, will see the first sentence of your description.
In other to get views, ensure that you include keywords that your channel is about in the first sentence. Especially your first 100-500 characters.
Here’s a good example of a well-written channel description:
With that, here’s a step by step guide on how to craft yours:
- On your channel homepage, navigate to your “ABOUT” section.
- Now, start with the genre of songs you do.
- Next, write a little about yourself.
- Rap things off with specific Call To Actions (Spotify link, social media links).
For more inspirational ideas, follow the description above.
The next is…
Step2#: Add Channel Keywords (Tags)
Youtube keywords are Instagram’s version of hashtags. Essentially, they tell the search engine what your whole channel is about.
Though, as a musician, when posting you’ll reinforce the tags again on every post.
That way, you’ll have a better chance of exploding in views and subscribers.
Here’s an of example a well-optimized channel from Us (KingdomEcho TV):
With that, here’s how to add tags to your Youtube Channel:
1. First, Install VidIQ
VidIQ is a chrome extension that helps optimize your videos and channel for particular keywords.
Ordinarily, without VidIQ, guessing is we can do. But with VidIQ we can get more views and subscribers more reliably.
To get VidIQ, search for it on google and install it. Then you may be asked to open an account.
Just follow the prompts. (It’s pretty easy).
Now that you’ve installed VidIQ, let’s move on…
2. Search For Likemninded Channels
What I want you to do is:
Search for channels that are already doing what you want to do.
Or search for a particular keyword that describes what your channel is about.
Then open the video, scroll down a little bit.
Check the sidebar, you’ll see “Channel tags or Video tags“.
Next, copy it by clicking on the icon (image above)
(Ensure the Youtube channel is over 20, 000 subscribers)
3. Paste It on Your Music Youtube Channel
Now you’ve copied the tags it’s time to paste them on your channel.
1. Head over To Your Channel
2. Click on “Customise channel“
3. From the navigation panel on the right, click on “Setting“
4. A pop-up window will appear, from there, click on “Channel“
5. Ensure you’re on the “Basic Info” tab
6. Then, paste In The Keywords into the box.
7. You should see something like this:
8. Click on save to keep changes
Congratulations! You’ve just optimized your channel for more views.
